Fridays with Emerald Stone [Wk.6] The Importance of Editing

Happy Friday!! Today I am going to explain some of the work flow that goes into editing engagement and/or wedding photographs, and why this process is SO important in the quality of the final images that I deliver!

before after 4

In-Camera RAW File   VS   Final Edited Image

“I would say that for 8-10 hours of shooting at a wedding, I would spend around 30 hours selecting and professionally editing the images…”
Getting the photos right (correct exposure for the scene/your style preference) IN CAMERA is number one. This is the most important step in my opinion. This starts with already knowing how you are going to edit your photo in post production. How the image is edited really enhances a photographers style. This is very much an artistic process. I spend a significant amount of time editing images to bring out highlights and shadows to increase the drama of the photograph.
Almost everyone that owns a camera and has taken a photo straight from the camera and printed it. This is one of the reasons people misunderstand the workload in editing an image. It is a misunderstanding that professional photographers do the same.
before after 1

In-Camera RAW File   VS   Final Edited Image

To give you an idea, I would say that for 8-10 hours shooting at a wedding, I would spend around 30 hours selecting and professionally editing the images, viewing all edited images, and making further corrections. So for a single wedding I would spend 40 hours on planning, photography and editing, and probably another 5 to 8 hours on travel and meetings before the wedding. Not all images require a lot of work, some images would require just a few minutes, while others I want to edit more artistically may require 30 minutes or more.

before after 2-new
That my friends is what makes editing SO important for your photos!! And it’s what I LOVE doing!! 🙂 I’m not joking when I say I’ve been editing photos since middle school… it’s something I’ve ALWAYS loved, and I’m honored to be able to put all of my experience into YOUR special images.

Fridays with Emerald Stone [Wk. 5] Why are Wedding Albums Important?

Why are Wedding Albums Important? Well I’m glad you asked!
Today I wanted to make a specific blog about the importance of a wedding album. Will and I got married about 6 years ago. We have learned a lot since then and it has been a big help in my wedding photography business. I understand bride and grooms on a deeper level from my own wedding day experiences. Ironically, I had no idea what to look for when looking for photographers. I know… it sounds nuts! But when researching wedding photographers we were pushed in so many directions with so much to think about: large deposits, coverage times, what package to purchase, etc. One thing that no one really told us about was the importance of a good wedding album.

MEMORY BOOK IMAGE-4

After a very busy wedding season I am now able to look back and see all the things I want to make better this year. One of the things is that every wedding collection I offer will include a VERY high-quality wedding album. As a bride and groom this is one of the few things that you can’t just go out and buy. Most high-end wedding album companies will only sell to registered businesses, unlike getting photo prints that anyone can go to Wal-Mart and print (which I don’t recommend). I do recommend that your wedding photos be displayed in the best way possible. A custom, high-quality album is simply one thing that a bride and groom can’t do without. Sure, there are plenty of places like Shutter Fly where you can use a pre-made template and drag and drop your photos. I even have some Shutter Fly albums. There is nothing wrong with them for iPhone photos, but those albums are not made to stand the test of time, and they are not meant to display high quality photographs. The quality of those albums are simply nowhere near what you want to have as your first family heirloom.

MEMORY BOOK IMAGE

You want an album that you can hand down to your kids & grand-kids one day and it still look just as good as the day you received it. We live in a digital age where it is so easy to just let our photos live on our phones or on Facebook. Let’s face it. Couples pay thousands of dollars for someone to capture, professional edit and spend an incredible amount of time on their wedding photography – and some of them just use the photos as the wallpapers on their computer. This is not something I want for my clients. I want you to have something that you can look back on and relive your whole wedding day.

Over the next few months I really want to compare my high-quality photos to some of the lower-end options. Most people have never had professional pictures taken, much less received high-quality print products. So it’s my job to show you what you’re missing out on!

Emerald Stone Photography just moved this week (still local to York, PA) and we have a ton of unpacking to do this weekend! We’ve been crazy busy all week with the move, but unpacking and personalizing our space will be so fun! 🙂 We are now located in Manchester, PA!! And LOVE it here. Something REALLY awesome – there is a gorgeous wedding venue right down the street from our new place called Historic Shady Lane. I’ve never been so close to such a stunning venue!! I can see a blog on this wedding venue in my near future. Have any of you ever been??

This week I am blogging about a Super cute couple, Kayla & Jack! Last week, on that very beautiful warm & sunny February day, we photographed their engagement session in downtown Frederick. It was such a great afternoon hanging out and getting to know this beautiful couple. We had a ton of laughs, and captured some really special moments between these two. Below I have highlighted some of our favorite images from their session. I cannot wait until their wedding day in May! It’s coming up So fast!! ❤

Fridays with Emerald Stone [Wk.3] Saying YES or NO to a First Look

Happy happy BEAUTIFUL Friday everyone!! I can’t believe this gorgeous weather in February! Even better, I get to shoot an amazing outdoor engagement session in downtown Frederick today in this weather! 🙂 So excited!

Today I am blogging on First Looks. I have so many bride-to-be’s ask me the question  “what do you think about a first look, we’re undecided?” While many brides stay traditional and want the first time their groom to see them to be walking down the aisle, other brides look forward to that moment they can see each other dressed for their wedding just the two of them to make it more intimate. So while it’s totally up to you on what is important to you for your big day, I’ve posted my thoughts below! I hope this helps in your big decision to have a first look, or not! ❤

-To DO or NOT TO DO a First Look at Your Wedding-

I have had the amazing pleasure of shooting many weddings throughout the years and I have seen so many different ways to do things! I have shared some of the neatest moments with our clients – and for that I am so so thankful.

kayla-kyle-wedding-22311

So with that said, if you are planning a wedding – let me just encourage you by saying – do what you want! The majority of photographers and wedding blogs out there will encourage you to have a first look with your soon-to-be spouse, but I am here to say…you can say no!

Don’t get me wrong – there are AMAZING perks to a first-look – even outside of photography. You get to calm you nerves and just relax a bit with your groom before the big moment – and that is awesome! And in the mean time, the photographer and videographer can get some great shots in the best timed lighting, thus giving you more time at the reception after the ceremony (since you don’t have to take pictures). PERKS – I tell ya!

rachel-brandon-styled-shoot-87

But on the flip side, it is WAY okay to choose NOT to do a first look! Don’t let vendors sway you into doing something you truly do not want to do – if you want to have a traditional “no-peaking-until-I-walk-that-aisle” then AWESOME! Any photographer can work with the circumstances thrown at them and as long as they are given a good chunk of time for pictures after the ceremony- they will make it work! Yes, the sun light may not be perfect, but again – it will work! A great thing to do is to meet with your photographer and videographer and let them be apart of scheduling your day, they will be able to help with timing out your big day and make sure you have adequate time for photography!

That moment when the groom sees his bride for the first time – it is breathtaking. The anticipation as the song begins and the door handle slightly moves is the most amazing moment. After I get home from a wedding and I am scanning through the images, I will hunt for that picture. The picture of the groom seeing his wife for the first time. It gives me goosebumps every time. The tears. The smile. It is so worth it.

Here are some great options outside of First-Look & Traditional No Peaking 🙂

1. Meet behind a door. You have probably seen this before – but again it is such a sweet time for the bride & groom to hold hands and just breath together. To speak, to pray, to giggle – it is awesome.

Fridays with Emerald Stone [Wk.2] Planning Your Engagement Shoot Outfits

Happy Friday! So excited for Week 2 Fridays with Emerald Stone! With several engagement shoots around the corner, I thought it be a great topic to touch on. Planning outfits can be challenging and time consuming! I hope this helps 🙂

[ DON’T FORGET TO COMMENT BELOW ON WHAT TOPIC YOU’D LIKE ME TO BLOG ABOUT NEXT WEEK! ]

engagement-3engagement

The most important thing during your engagement shoot is to be yourself!  The whole purpose of the shoot is to capture exactly who you are, and show your personalities.

Wear solids or simple patterns. Don’t over do it with the patterns. Solid dark colors are the most flattering. Avoid bright florescent colors. Wearing a color that resembles a bright highlighter will cast that exact color onto your face.

Dress for the season, especially if your engagement shoot is outdoors.

jessica-caudill-engagement1

You’ll want to coordinate with each other. Think about colors that complement each other, say cherry red and bright blue, or baby pink and turquoise, and make sure your outfits are color coordinated. The same goes for how dressy you’re planning to be; if you’re going for a formal look, then both of you need to be formal.

Consider your location. Think about where you will be shooting with me. Are you going for a soft natural/rustic feel? Then sticking to soft neutral colors may be a great option. Are you going to be shooting in a city or urban area? Then brighter colors or a more “dressed up” approach may work with the setting better. It doesn’t hurt to look at shoots from similar locations and see what other people wore. It’s a great way to see what you like.

I really hope this helps when making the decision on what to wear for your engagement shoot! Here are a few examples of Engagement Photos:

Fridays with Emerald Stone [Wk.1]

Happy Friday everyone! At the beginning of the year I decided to commit to a weekly blog –  and it’s starting TODAY! I will be blogging every Friday about business, wedding, engagements and photography. I’m inviting all of you to post in the comments anything you’d like me to blog about under those categories. This blog is for YOU! My amazing followers, clients & friends. I can’t wait to hear from you all!

Today I just want to say THANK YOU!! Thank you for your support, sharing, referrals, and continued business. This week has truly been amazing. I’ve had several entries in my Engagement Giveaway (if you haven’t entered yet there’s still time! You won’t want to miss out!), and booked THREE weddings this week – 2 for 2017 and 1 for 2018! I am seriously feeling so blessed to have such amazing clients! I can’t say it enough how much I love what I do.

I also want to thank a friend of mine, Shayla Button, who is the Wedding Sales Manager at Wyndridge Farm. She helped put together one of the most AMAZING wedding shows I have ever participated in last month!! It was such a huge success and I am just so grateful to be a part of their network of vendors. If you haven’t been to Wyndridge – it’s a MUST SEE. I not only photograph weddings at this venue (3 booked there this year so far, Ahh:)!), but we dine here, take our families to their events, and more! Their food and Crafty beverages are outstanding! So I’m sure you can imagine how wonderful it would be to have your wedding there!

That’s all for today – my Friday Thoughts 🙂 Below are some of my favorite images from 2016! I’m so behind on posting these…;) Thanks everyone for listening! And looking forward to hear what you’d all love me to post about next week!
